Sonntag Früh, Hermannplatz

Sonntag Früh, Hermannplatz / Sunday Morning, Hermannplatz (2026) is an installation consisting of porcelain, wood, woodcut, linocut, washi paper, and rear-projected animation.

Hermannplatz is more of a collision of roads and neighborhoods than a planned plaza. It offers no respite from urbanity’s noise, dirt, and chaos. Most people experience it while running to catch a bus or U-bahn or heading to the mall whose demise has been forecasted many times, but hasn’t arrived quite yet. It’s the center of my Berlin, and on early Sunday mornings, as I headed to work at the bakery, it slept with an uncanny peacefulness. I wanted to portray a corner of this part of town in porcelain, paper, and prints, an homage to the beauty that can be found inside the most unexpected places. Hermannplatz’s many faces, many moods, many cultures combine to create one of the most thoroughly diverse corners of the city, one that I experienced every day when it was my home, a place that lives close to my heart despite its gritty first impression.
